Background of the Study

The aviation industry in Nigeria is characterized by significant challenges, including high operating costs, regulatory pressures, and financial instability. Indigenous airlines, such as Air Peace, play a vital role in connecting regions and driving economic growth, yet they often struggle with financial sustainability due to poor governance structures (Adefemi & Ugochukwu, 2024).

Governance structures encompass the frameworks, policies, and processes that guide corporate decision-making and resource allocation. Effective governance enhances transparency, accountability, and operational efficiency, all of which are critical for financial stability (Bello & Ojo, 2023). This study investigates the impact of governance structures on the financial stability of Air Peace, providing actionable recommendations for strengthening governance in Nigerian airlines.

Statement of the Problem

Financial instability remains a persistent issue for indigenous Nigerian airlines, often attributed to weak governance structures, inadequate financial controls, and mismanagement (Ibrahim & Danjuma, 2023). Air Peace, despite its success in expanding domestic and international routes, faces challenges in maintaining long-term financial stability.

While previous studies have explored operational efficiency and regulatory compliance in the aviation sector, limited research has examined the role of governance structures in financial stability. This study seeks to address this gap by evaluating how governance practices influence financial outcomes in Air Peace.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the relationship between governance structures and financial stability in Air Peace.

  2. To identify governance practices that enhance financial sustainability in Nigerian airlines.

  3. To propose strategies for improving governance structures to strengthen financial stability.

Research Questions

  1. How do governance structures influence financial stability in Air Peace?

  2. What governance practices enhance financial sustainability in Nigerian airlines?

  3. What strategies can improve governance structures to strengthen financial stability?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Governance structures do not significantly influence financial stability in Air Peace.

  2. Governance practices do not significantly enhance financial sustainability in Nigerian airlines.

  3. Strategies to improve governance structures do not significantly strengthen financial stability.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on Air Peace’s operations in Abuja, analyzing governance structures and financial stability from 2015 to 2025. Limitations include restricted access to financial records and the study’s focus on a single airline, which may not fully reflect industry-wide dynamics.

Definitions of Terms

  • Governance Structures: The frameworks and processes used to direct and manage an organization.

  • Financial Stability: The ability of an organization to sustain operations and meet financial obligations over time.

  • Indigenous Airlines: Locally owned and operated airline companies within Nigeria.
